As you will be aware, a local man died in a car crash a few weeks ago.

As a result of this Sergeant Bede Haughey, Officer in Charge, Warkworth Police visited the club on the 14th July to talk to club members and visitors.

A summary of his talk to those present follows below.

Grant was well known to many members of the Kaipara Flats Sports Club. He was not only a grandfather, father and brother, he was also a friend to many local people. He died in a car crash not far from the Club after calling in there for a beer. Any culpability around his death is a matter for others to decide but it is timely for us to reflect on our own behaviour.

I spoke to his 4 kids after the funeral and they all supported me speaking to the patrons of the club on a Thursday night. They did not want the nature of Grant’s death to define him but at the same time they wanted others to learn from it. Specifically they wanted to reinforce the need for people to arrange a sober driver before they went out for a drink.

Often when we stop drivers who have had too much to drink, they come up with similar excuses “I had no other way of getting home”, “There’s no taxis in this area or at this time” and “I know this road like the back of my hand, I’ve driven it a 1000 times”. Obviously none of these stories cut the mustard and anyone caught driving over the limit will be prosecuted. That’s why we are stressing the importance of arranging a sober driver before drinking.

For some it’s not the end of the world if they do lose their licence. They find other ways of getting from A to B for 6 months or so. Seems silly that the same people can’t organise a ride from A to B for the night they knew they were going to stop for a few.

But it’s not just the fear of being caught that should be upper most in everyone’s mind, it should be the fear of causing the death of a father or brother or friend.  No one wants to carry that burden.

Our business is to reduce and prevent road related trauma and I’d like to think we have 100% community support. That means everyone taking responsibility for themselves and also extends to taking the keys off our mates when they’ve had too much.

We don’t have many Police Officers in this neck of the woods, so we can’t be watching every road but I can assure you that we will be out and about and taking a zero tolerance to drink driving.

Please drive safely.

Sergeant Bede Haughey

Officer in Charge

Warkworth Police

With regards to the Kaipara Flats Sports Clubs recent problems with drink driving.

The Club has just had its licence renewed.

In renewing our licence we take on the legal requirements that go with it.

The Club has a Policy on its Host Responsibilities. While we endeavour to do this, the last few weeks have tested this policy.

The Club has done nothing wrong but in an attempt to address the situation the following recommendations will be implemented.

John will reinforce the message about drink driving at the 7.30 pm drawing of the raffles slot.

There will be a breathalyser available at the bar if the members are unsure of their intake.

Note” This will be available next Thursday.

At the end of the day it is the Club Members responsibility but we must all make every effort to insure we are doing has much as we can for everyone.

Tennis

At the recent Sports Club awards we acknowledged the following successes:-

The Core Steel Kaipara Flats Business House Team consisting of Robbie Blair, Matthew Buchanan, Andrew Boyd, Brent Butler, Carl Jamieson and Benji Tipace who won the Warkworth A grade business house competition.

Philippa Wech was awarded the Shirley Gubb trophy for her work with the Junior Tennis club.

Carl Jamieson won the Men’s Championship.

Robbie Blair and Charlie Holloway won the Men’s Doubles

Katie Mitchell won the Ladies Championship.

This year we are concentrating on Junior Tennis and are in the process of looking for a coach and Junior Tennis co-ordinator.

We are looking at changing the coaching day to a Friday after school as we feel Friday’s will not clash with quite so many other sports that train on a Thursday.

Hopefully this will work well with Junior Cricket who also play on a Friday.

The Tennis Club has been offered the running of the Thursday night raffles, funds raised will be put towards the new lights and court up grades. Any Tennis Club members willing to help with running the raffle please let Karen, Matthew or Katie know.

Applications for grants to fund new lights and possible up grading of courts 2 and 3 are ongoing, and we should know in the next few months if our applications have been successful.

The Tennis AGM is on Thursday 11th August at the Sports Club starting at 7pm.

Petanque

Winners of the past season: Women’s Singles was Evelyn Gauntlet for 2nd year running and Maury Purdy won the Men’s Singles.

We have decided to trial a new challenge series starting late October (when the weather warms up a bit) within the club where Petanque will be challenging each of the other sports, Netball, Tennis, Cricket, Woodchopping and The Committee! All mixed teams.

We’ve had positive feedback on this format and will confirm early October so people can get some training in – “professional” lessons available yeah right! Will look to run these on Sunday afternoons through the summer.

If the above sports would put the word out within their group for a heads up, will need a minimum of 8 people from each group.

Will also have a refreshments sponsor on board for prizes!

Cricket

The cricket prizegiving for last season was held on Sunday June 26 at 3 pm and prizes represented at the Kaipara Flats Sports Awards Dinner held on Saturday 2nd July.
